Rice Rescues Arsenal With an 82nd-Minute Equaliser at Bayern Munich After Kane's Penalty Made It 2-1

Arsenal were heading for their first defeat in 14 league-phase games until Declan Rice finished late in Munich, though Bukayo Saka went off injured early and Kane kept his scoring run alive.

With about eight minutes left at the Allianz Arena, Arsenal were heading for their first defeat of the Champions League league phase. Then Declan Rice finished a late move, and a night that had also cost them Bukayo Saka early ended 2-2. Arsenal's Champions League unbeaten run now stands at 15 league-phase matches, the club said.

The point leaves Arsenal on seven from three games, The Journal reported.

How did the match unfold in Munich?

Saka went down holding his leg around the eighth or ninth minute, a non-contact injury, and was replaced by Eberechi Eze. Eze made the difference quickly: he scored in the 25th minute from a Martin Odegaard pass, and an offside flag was overturned on review. About ten minutes later Harry Kane threaded a ball to Alphonso Davies, who finished to make it 1-1 at the break.

Just after the hour Kane's shot struck Jurrien Timber's arm and he scored the penalty himself for 2-1. Rice's equaliser came in the closing minutes after a Viktor Gyokeres involvement, per Al Jazeera, which also credited saves from David Raya and Manuel Neuer in the second half.

What did the result mean for Kane and Arsenal?

Kane has now scored in 10 consecutive Champions League appearances, one short of Cristiano Ronaldo's record of 11. The penalty was his 16th goal in 23 matches against Arsenal. For Arsenal it was only the second time in the European Cup or Champions League that they had scored first, gone behind and avoided defeat; the other was a 2-2 draw with Bayern in April 2024, the club noted.

The worry is Saka. Arsenal have not given a diagnosis in the reports we read. They host Everton on Saturday at 3pm UK time, then travel to Slavia Prague on 4 November.

It was a match of fine margins: Arsenal had slightly more of the ball and a narrow shot edge at the break, while Bayern led on expected goals, according to NBC Sports' halftime numbers. Neither side could land a second blow after Rice's goal.

What else happened in the Champions League on Wednesday?

Real Madrid beat RB Leipzig 4-1, with Kylian Mbappe scoring his 73rd Champions League goal and Yan Diomande scoring against his former club, according to NBC Sports. Como beat Manchester United 4-1 in Italy, with Nico Paz scoring twice and Joshua Zirkzee getting a late consolation. Aston Villa won 3-1 against Viking, with Ross Barkley and Emiliano Buendia scoring in the first half.

Rice has now been involved in five goals in his last eight games in all competitions, the club said, and Neuer made his 163rd Champions League appearance. The Journal noted it was only the second time Arsenal had dropped points in 12 games across all competitions this season.

Arsenal's next test is Everton, and whether Saka is fit will shape how Mikel Arteta lines up before the trip to Prague.
