Brewers Beat Rays 3-2 in World Series Game 1 as Misiorowski Throws the Fastest Pitch in Series History
Milwaukee led from the first inning, then needed a video review and a final strikeout to hold off a late Tampa Bay rally in the opener of a series neither club has ever won.

The first pitch of the 2026 World Series was the loudest thing in the building. Jacob Misiorowski opened Friday night in Milwaukee with a 103.5 mph fastball to Yandy Diaz, which NBC News reported was the fastest pitch ever thrown in a World Series game. The Brewers went on to beat the Tampa Bay Rays 3-2 at American Family Field and lead the series 1-0.
It was Milwaukee's first World Series game since 1982, and the sellout crowd got a night that kept threatening to slip away. We set the stage in our series preview; here is how the opener played out.
How did the Brewers win World Series Game 1?
They scored early and then protected a thin lead. Christian Yelich hit an RBI triple in the first inning, and William Contreras followed with a single to make it 2-0, as the Bleacher Report box score shows. Tampa Bay starter Nick Martinez settled in after that, allowing two earned runs over five innings with five strikeouts.
The Rays pulled one back on a groundout by Liam Hicks. Then Jackson Chourio, who had two hits on the night, delivered the insurance run with a two-out single in the seventh that scored Cooper Pratt and made it 3-1. Contreras also had two hits and threw out two would-be base stealers, according to NBC News.
What did Misiorowski do?
Beyond the record-setting first pitch, the Brewers starter went five innings, allowing four hits and one earned run with one walk and three strikeouts, Bleacher Report's line shows. Milwaukee's bullpen then held Tampa Bay in check until the ninth, with Trevor Megill closing. Some outlets, including Fox Sports, spell his name McGill.
What happened in the wild ninth inning?
The Brewers believed they had won it. A grounder by Hicks looked like a game-ending double play, but a video review overturned the call because Pratt's foot was slightly off the bag at second base as he caught a high throw from second baseman Brice Turang.
That gave Tampa Bay new life. The Rays scored once more on a Hicks groundout and had the tying run in scoring position, but Megill struck out Jonny DeLuca to end it. For a team that has never won a title, it was a reminder of how thin the margin is in October.
What happens next in the World Series?
This is the first World Series since 1980 in which both teams are chasing a first championship, NBC News noted, and Game 1 winners have gone on to take the series 62.8 percent of the time. Game 2 is on Saturday night, and Fox Sports lists Drew Rasmussen as the Rays' starter. After a one-run loss that turned on a review, Tampa Bay will want a quick answer.
