Brighton Beat Crystal Palace 5-0 as Diego Gomez Scored From Inside His Own Half

Three goals in ten minutes at the Amex turned the M23 derby into a rout, and Brighton's goals tally now trails only Barcelona among Europe's big five leagues.

Crystal Palace were three goals down inside ten minutes at the Amex on Sunday, and one of them came from 51 metres. Brighton beat Palace 5-0 in the Premier League's M23 derby, a rout at home, with Diego Gomez's strike from his own half the goal everyone will remember, as ESPN's live report put it.

Palace had gone to Lyon on Thursday and lost 3-2 in Europe, and it showed. Brighton, by contrast, were in form, ESPN noted, and had already beaten Manchester United in the Carabao Cup.

Who scored for Brighton against Crystal Palace?

Five different names went on the scoresheet. Jaydee Canvot put the first one into his own net in the fourth minute, then Gomez and Yasin Ayari made it 3-0 before the ten-minute mark, with Ayari's finish taking a deflection. Charalampos Kostoulas added a fourth shortly after the break and substitute Jack Hinshelwood made it five in the 84th minute, per Opta's analysis site The Analyst.

How good was Gomez's goal?

Very. The Analyst measured it at 51.3 metres, the eighth-longest goal in the Premier League since 2006-07, and the furthest in the competition since Wayne Rooney scored from 57.7 metres for Everton against West Ham in November 2017.

It was also part of a rare opening. Brighton became the ninth side in Premier League history to score three goals in the first ten minutes of a match and the first since Newcastle against Tottenham in April 2023.

What does it mean for the table?

Brighton have scored 23 league goals this season, their most ever at this stage in the top four tiers, and only Barcelona have scored more across Europe's big five leagues, The Analyst said. Their last four league wins add up to 15-0. It was also Fabian Hurzeler's first win over Palace as Brighton head coach.

After Monday night's game Brighton sit third on 16 points with a goal difference of plus 18, behind Manchester City on 21 and Arsenal on 18, according to the league table on ESPN's Tottenham report. Palace are 14th on seven points, and have conceded 17 league goals, their most at this point since 1980-81.

Chelsea are fourth on 13 points and Liverpool fifth on 12 in the same table, so Brighton's goal difference makes them the early pace-setters of the chasing pack behind City and Arsenal. ESPN also noted that the club has recorded two 4-0 wins in the Europa Conference League this season, so the goals are not only a league story.

The next question is whether Brighton can keep scoring at this pace once the schedule thickens. A side with a 15-0 run over its last four league wins will not be short of confidence.
