Two of the NBA's biggest names spent Thursday night in the injury report. Minnesota's Anthony Edwards had a knee procedure that will cost him weeks, and Portland's Ja Morant left a loss to his old team with a hamstring problem.
How long is Anthony Edwards out?
Edwards underwent a right knee arthroscopic debridement on Thursday at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and the team called it successful. ESPN reported that Shams Charania said he could be out up to two months. The Timberwolves have not set a return date. KSTP said the surgeon was Dr. Craig Bennett and that it had been told to expect about two months, and team president Tim Connelly said Minnesota definitely expects Edwards back this season.
The timeline is abrupt. Edwards, 25, had knee pain last spring and was limited to a career-low 61 games last season. He grimaced at his knee in Sunday's home opener, then scored 47 points in an overtime loss at Cleveland on Monday. An MRI on Tuesday showed new damage not seen in earlier scans, and Minnesota lost to Golden State on Wednesday. He scored 133 points through four games, a franchise record, and averaged 33.3 points. Coach Chris Finch called the news a bit of a shock to everybody and said he is confident the team has the depth and experience to get through an extended stretch without him.
What happened to Ja Morant?
The Memphis Grizzlies beat the Portland Trail Blazers 124-103 and moved to 5-0, while Portland, which had started 3-0, fell to 3-1. In his first game against the team he played for in his first seven seasons, Morant scored 14 points with three assists in 23 minutes before leaving in the fourth quarter with a left hamstring injury, ESPN reported. He did not return. Portland coach Micah Nori said more information would come on Friday and added, "I'm hoping that it's nothing major."
According to CBS Sports, Memphis broke the game open in the third quarter with a 10-0 run, and a three-pointer by Zach Edey made it 96-85. Cameron Boozer recorded the first triple-double of his NBA career, with 18 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists. Isaiah Stewart led the Memphis bench with 18 points, and Deni Avdija scored 24 for Portland. Damian Lillard shot 3 of 13.
What else happened in the NBA on Thursday?
Atlanta beat Cleveland 114-111, ending a three-game losing streak. Onyeka Okongwu had a season-high 29 points and 12 rebounds, and James Harden scored 24 for the Cavaliers. Donovan Mitchell had two chances to tie on the final possession and missed both. In New Orleans, the Pelicans beat Sacramento 132-120.
The first big questions of the season are now medical. Memphis plays at Sacramento on Saturday, Portland at Utah, and Minnesota will have to learn to win without the player who has carried it for four games.
