Everton Beat Newcastle 3-1 to Reach a Carabao Cup Quarter-Final With Fleetwood, Without Grealish

Garner, Hackney and Barry scored at Hill Dickinson Stadium, while the on-loan winger was left out for a breach of club discipline, days before the two sides meet again in the league.

Everton are through to the last eight of the Carabao Cup, and the story around the game was a player who was not in it. The Toffees beat Newcastle United 3-1 at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Thursday night, and will face Fleetwood Town in the quarter-finals in December, Sky Sports reported.

Fleetwood are the League Two side who knocked Arsenal out on penalties on Tuesday, which turns a routine draw into something with an edge.

How did Everton beat Newcastle?

James Garner opened the scoring in the 34th minute, and Hayden Hackney made it 2-0 just before the break with his first goal for the club. Thierno Barry added the third in the 69th minute. Newcastle's reply came late, from Dan Burn, who scored a consolation goal around the 88th or 89th minute, depending on the outlet. ESPN's scoreboard lists the same scorers and the 3-1 final.

Newcastle head coach Matthias Jaissle described the defeat as a reflection of the story of the season so far, Sky said, while David Moyes praised his players' professionalism and the values behind the team.

Why was Jack Grealish left out?

Everton said Grealish was unavailable for selection because of a breach of club discipline. Sky Sports News reporter Keith Downie said the winger failed to attend a training session in the build-up to the tie, according to Sky's report on the decision. Grealish is 31 and on loan from Manchester City. He missed Everton's league defeat at Arsenal through illness and had started their previous three league matches.

Moyes backed the club's decision, and the matter did not go further than that. "It's a club decision, so I support the decision," he said, and he pointed reporters to the club for more. Asked whether Grealish would be available for Monday's Premier League match at Newcastle, he said he would never give any team news away. The defender Jarrad Branthwaite remains out while in concussion protocols.

What happens next for Everton?

The return trip comes quickly. Everton travel to Newcastle in the league on Monday, and Moyes will have to decide whether the Grealish matter is closed by then. The result of Thursday night is simple enough: a three-goal performance, a first goal for Hackney and a place in the last eight, with the one unresolved question sitting off the pitch.

The Fleetwood tie, in December, looks one of the more interesting of the round. A League Two side has already beaten a Premier League club in this competition this week, and Everton would not wish to be the next. For Newcastle, defeat on Thursday followed by the same opponent on Monday is an awkward week, and Jaissle's verdict on the season so far suggests he knows it.
