The White Sox and Yankees Swept Their Way Into the ALDS as the Phillies and Braves Were Forced to a Deciding Game Three

Major League Baseball's wild card round delivered two clean sweeps and two series still fighting for survival on Tuesday, as the Chicago White Sox beat the Houston Astros 7-3 and the New York Yankees routed the Boston Red Sox 9-2 to each close out their best-of-three series in two games. Highlights of the White Sox win showed Chicago completing a sweep on the road against Houston, a result that sent the young, scrappy South Siders into the American League Division Series for the first time since their playoff run two decades ago.

White Sox end a long wait

Chicago's 7-3 win over the Astros gave the White Sox their first postseason series victory since 2005, a drought that had spanned the entire careers of most of the current roster. The series sweep means Houston, which had been a fixture of deep October runs for much of the past decade, is out of the postseason in the opening round.

Yankees bury the Red Sox again

New York's 9-2 win was built around a decisive sixth inning that turned a competitive game into a blowout, and the result sent Boston home for the second consecutive season at the hands of their oldest rival. Across the two games of the series, the Yankees outscored the Red Sox 18-2, a margin that left little doubt about which team controlled the series from the opening pitch.

Padres roll past the Cubs

In the other National League matchup, the San Diego Padres took control early against the Chicago Cubs, with a Gavin Sheets home run helping build a lead the Cubs never seriously threatened. The result put San Diego on the verge of advancing to the division series without the drama that engulfed the night's other National League series.

Phillies force a decider

Philadelphia's series against Atlanta went the other way from the two sweeps, with the Phillies forcing a third and deciding game after a dramatic extra-innings win evened the series at one game apiece. The updated playoff bracket showed the Phillies and Braves set for a winner-take-all finish, with Atlanta having taken the series opener behind a late home run before Philadelphia answered in game two.

A wild card round with real stakes

The format, which pits the top seed in each league's bracket against a lower seed in a short series, has produced its share of upsets since it was introduced, and this year's round was no exception, with both the White Sox and Padres emerging as the more dominant teams in series many expected to be closer. The sweeps by Chicago and New York also mean both clubs will have extra rest before their division series opponents are confirmed, a scheduling advantage that has mattered in past postseasons when teams have had to play through longer, more draining series earlier in October.

What comes next

With two division series fields effectively set and the Phillies-Braves winner joining them once game three is played, the postseason now moves into a round where the margin for error narrows further, and teams that looked dominant in the wild card round, like the White Sox and Yankees, will face opponents who had the benefit of a first-round bye built on a better regular season record.
