From Sunday, the third-busiest gateway in southern Italy goes dark. Naples Capodichino airport closes to all commercial flights from 1 to 30 November while its runway and connecting taxiways are rebuilt, operator Gesac confirmed on Thursday, with works running day and night and about 500 people on site, The Local Italy reported.

The closure was originally pencilled in for January to March and moved to November, historically the airport's quietest month, Travel Extra noted. Gesac puts its spending on the works at 30 million euros, per The Local; Travel Extra reports the runway contract itself at roughly 19.4 to 20 million euros. Normal service is due to resume on 1 December, with the last days of the month built in as a buffer for bad weather.

Which flights move to Salerno?

Flights to 15 destinations, six in Italy and nine abroad, will operate from Salerno Costa d'Amalfi airport, about an hour south, The Local said. Radio Marte's list of November destinations from Salerno includes Milan Linate and Malpensa, Paris Orly, Madrid, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Dusseldorf, Stuttgart, Luxembourg, Dubai and Sharm el-Sheikh, flown by ITA Airways, easyJet, Eurowings, Iberia, Luxair, Transavia, Vueling, flydubai and Neos among others. Not every Naples flight is transferred: airlines are cancelling some services outright and rerouting others through Rome Fiumicino, as Lufthansa Group has done with its Frankfurt, Munich, Vienna and Zurich flights. Passengers should check with their carrier rather than assume a Salerno departure.

How do you get between Naples and Salerno airport?

By a dedicated shuttle. Gesac and Busitalia Campania are running eight coaches a day in each direction between Piazza Garibaldi outside Napoli Centrale station and the Salerno terminal, every day from 1 to 30 November, at 12 euros per person per leg, payable by card on board, Radio Marte reported. Departures from Naples are at 05:00, 06:00, 10:30, 12:30, 14:30, 16:30, 18:30 and 19:30, with the return runs from Salerno between 08:20 and 22:20; the trip takes about an hour and a quarter with no changes. Extra buses also link the airport with Salerno railway station, which has high-speed trains to Naples and Rome.

For travellers heading to Pompeii, Sorrento or the Amalfi Coast, Salerno is in fact closer than Naples. The practical loss is frequency and choice, and the morning and evening peaks when the shuttle runs least often.

What does a month without an airport cost the city?

Early signs are not good. Travel Extra reported November hotel bookings down more than 40 percent, with occupancy expected around 40 percent outside the All Saints weekend and international visitors hit hardest. Tourism operators have asked for a coordinated transport plan. Gesac, for its part, is treating the shutdown as the price of a runway that will serve a separate expansion already planned for 2035.

The test comes in the first week, when the shuttle timetable meets real flight loads and the Rome rebookings start to bite. If the works finish inside their 24 working days, Capodichino could reopen a few days early; Gesac has promised nothing beyond 1 December.
