The Green Bay Packers did what they needed to on Thursday night, and nothing more. They beat the Carolina Panthers 27-19 at Lambeau Field to improve to 5-3, and they did it with a defence that harassed Bryce Young all evening and a receiver who played through a scare, according to ESPN's game report.

The Panthers fell to 3-4, which still leaves them tied with Atlanta at the top of the NFC South, a reminder of how open that division is.

How did the Packers beat the Panthers?

Josh Jacobs scored twice, one rushing and one receiving touchdown, and Green Bay's second touchdown came after Carolina had led 10-6. Chuba Hubbard answered with a touchdown for the Panthers and ran 22 times for 81 yards, but his team could not keep pace. Jordan Love completed 30 passes, and ESPN noted that he was 14 of 16 against the blitz for 126 yards.

The Packers' running game was ordinary. ESPN reported 65 rushing yards on 25 carries. The CBS Sports report adds a striking number: Green Bay's 485 rushing yards through eight games are the fewest in NFL history for a team above .500 at this point of a season.

What happened to Christian Watson?

Watson caught passes early, then went to a hospital in the second quarter with a chest injury. He returned in the third quarter and added a 13-yard catch, finishing with more than 100 receiving yards. CBS Sports credited him with eight catches for 113 yards. ESPN described the problem as a chest injury, and he was cleared to come back.

Why was Bryce Young under siege?

Young completed 22 of 39 passes for 200 yards in ESPN's count, with a touchdown and an interception, and was sacked six times. Ty'Ron Hopper intercepted a tipped pass. CBS described a Packers defence that rebounded from a poor stretch with a dominant showing. Carolina was also already without three cornerbacks, and Will Lee III left with a hamstring injury during the game.

Trey Smack's missed extra point, his eighth miss of the season, kept the margin closer than it needed to be. CBS reported that Carolina finished with ten unanswered points in the fourth quarter, cutting a 17-point deficit to eight before the Packers' defence closed it out.

What is next for Green Bay and Carolina?

The Packers travel to face the New England Patriots on 8 November, and the Panthers host the Denver Broncos the same day. For Green Bay, the question is whether the rushing numbers recover before the schedule toughens. For Carolina, it is whether the offensive line can protect Young well enough to stay in a race that, at 3-4, is still entirely theirs to win.
