Street Fighter Wins the Weekend With $31 Million, but an Elizabeth Holmes Documentary Opens to $15 Million

The video game adaptation topped the chart, though the real story was a three-hour A24 documentary with a surprise opening that only one non-music documentary has beaten.

A video game movie won the weekend, and a documentary about the convicted Theranos founder stole the headlines. Paramount's Street Fighter opened at number one in North America with an estimated $31 million over 16 to 18 October, while A24's You Can See Everything, a documentary about Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes, took about $15 million in second place, according to figures carried by The Avocado, which cites Deadline.

These are weekend estimates and will move when final numbers arrive. We wrote about the game film's modest start in our report on its Thursday previews, which critics split on.

How big is You Can See Everything's opening?

Very big for what it is. The three-hour film, directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, follows Holmes in the 34 days before she went to prison in 2023, and opened on 855 theatres, per Box Office Mojo's daily chart. Deadline, quoted by Yahoo, called it the second-biggest opening for a documentary in US history outside music films, behind only Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11, which took $23.9 million in 2004.

By our arithmetic, $15 million across 855 theatres is about $17,500 a screen. Street Fighter, on 3,575 theatres, managed roughly $8,700. The film was kept secret until a surprise screening at the Telluride Film Festival in September, Yahoo reported. Holmes posted on X on 5 October: "I really don't think you are ready for this doc."

Holmes was convicted of conspiracy to defraud investors and wire fraud, and is scheduled to be released from prison in 2030. Yahoo said Letterboxd users rate the film 4.8 out of 5, and that some observers are already talking about it as an awards contender.

What about Street Fighter and the rest of the chart?

Street Fighter was a solid but not spectacular start. The Avocado said it is approaching the $34 million domestic total of the 1994 film, and that Paramount had hoped for more. Behind the top two, Other Mommy took $8.35 million in its second weekend, down 70 percent, and Whalefall opened to $8 million. Sense and Sensibility debuted with $7.25 million, and Verity took $6.2 million in its third weekend, per the same report. Resident Evil added $5.5 million in its fifth week, Heart of the Beast took $4.83 million, and the Indian film Jailer 2 made $3.25 million from only 420 theatres.

Box Office Mojo's daily chart estimated Street Fighter at about $12.95 million on Friday and You Can See Everything at about $5.54 million. By our arithmetic, that means Friday supplied roughly 42 percent of the game film's weekend, a front-loaded pattern that fan-driven openings often show.

The next test is the hold. A documentary that draws crowds to a limited run is one thing. Keeping them as it spreads to more screens is another, and the second weekend will show how much of the $15 million was curiosity.
