Trump Puts the Kansas and Iowa Rallies Back on for Sunday as More Than 43 Million Americans Have Already Voted
A day after the RNC scrapped two red-state rallies in favour of phone events, the president will appear in Salina and Cedar Rapids with both Senate seats rated toss-ups and Election Day on Tuesday.

Donald Trump's weekend is back on the road. Less than a day after the Republican National Committee cancelled his rallies in Salina, Kansas and Dubuque, Iowa in favour of a "72-hour sprint" of telephone rallies, the White House reversed course on Friday: the president will hold back-to-back rallies on Sunday in Salina and in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, NBC News reported. The Salina Airport Authority confirmed a 2 pm start at Salina Regional Airport, KWCH said.
The flip-flop matters because of what is at stake in both states. Kansas has not sent a Democrat to the Senate in nearly a century, yet Senator Roger Marshall's race against Democrat Adam Hamilton, a Methodist pastor, is rated a toss-up, with the cost of the Iran war a live issue, NBC said. Iowa's open Senate seat, where Republican Representative Ashley Hinson is running, is also a toss-up, and all but one of the state's House races are competitive.
Why were the rallies cancelled in the first place?
The official reason was reach. The RNC said on Thursday the events would no longer take place as scheduled so the president could speak to voters across the country, and the White House said the schedule had been rearranged to fit nearly 20 additional telerallies. Trump said he was skipping Kansas because Marshall was doing well, and when a reporter asked whether health was a factor he answered "I feel perfect," the Associated Press reported. He had joked on Monday, hoarse, that vocal cords were not made for a rally every day.
Iowa Republicans were plainly unhappy. One GOP operative told NBC an in-person rally would have been really helpful; another said the state was in pretty good shape but he would love to have the president. Trump has headlined 25 rallies in October and says he will visit 35 places before Tuesday. On Friday he is due in Daytona Beach for Representative Randy Fine and Senator Ashley Moody, both in races the Cook Political Report rates solidly Republican. A Vice President JD Vance event in St. Cloud, Minnesota, was cancelled for scheduling reasons, the AP said.
How many people have voted early?
More than 43 million by Thursday night, according to the University of Florida Election Lab figures cited by the BBC, with four to five million ballots arriving each day. In the roughly half of states that record party registration, Democrats account for 44 percent of early ballots, Republicans 31.2 percent and unaffiliated voters 24.7 percent; registration is not a vote, and Republicans have historically voted in larger numbers on the day itself. Texas, which records neither party nor race, has already passed its entire 2022 early total by about 1.75 million voters, with more than 5.8 million ballots cast.
The 2022 midterm early vote finished at 45.9 million, a mark this cycle is on course to pass over the weekend. The Justice Department's late lawsuits in Alaska and California, which we have covered separately, sit over all of it.
Sunday's two rallies give Trump a final in-person argument in the two Senate races that could decide the chamber. Whether a presidential visit moves a toss-up in the last 48 hours, or merely confirms which seats the party is worried about, is the question Tuesday answers.
