Wall Street opened the week by taking back part of Friday's loss. Technology led the rebound on Monday, helped by an Anthropic stock-market filing that eased worries about the AI boom, while oil gave back a little ground after reaching a five-month high.
The S&P 500 gained 0.70 percent to 7,677, the Nasdaq Composite rose 0.82 percent to 26,169 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.28 percent to 52,362, The Motley Fool reported in its closing summary.
Why did the stock market rise on Monday?
The Fool credits Anthropic's S-1 filing to list on the Nasdaq under the ticker ANT. Strong revenue growth in the document, it says, calmed fears that the AI spending wave was running out of steam. The rally came after a rough Friday: the Dow fell 1.2 percent to 52,215.16, the S&P 500 lost 0.5 percent to 7,623.68 and the Nasdaq slipped 0.2 percent to 25,955.34, according to a Zacks market summary. For the week the S&P 500 finished down 0.5 percent and the Nasdaq down 0.7 percent, while the Dow gained 0.4 percent.
Which stocks moved most?
The Fool's list of notable movers:
- Surgery Partners jumped 48 percent on reports of takeover talks that would hand a majority stake to a buyer.
- Lumentum rose 8 percent after an analyst started coverage with a bullish price target.
- Tesla gained more than 5 percent after Barclays upgraded it to Overweight and lifted its price target from $370 to $450.
- Meta Platforms fell about 2 percent after it filed to raise up to $95 billion for AI infrastructure.
Gold added 0.46 percent to $4,026.30 an ounce, and the 10-year Treasury yield edged up to about 5 percent.
What is oil doing?
Crude retreated on Monday, reversing part of Friday's energy-driven session, the Fool says. On Friday Brent settled at $116.72 a barrel, up 3.1 percent, and West Texas Intermediate at $103.27, up 3.8 percent, as reports that the United States and Israel might plan fresh strikes on Iran pushed oil to a five-month high, Zacks reported. Eight of 11 S&P sectors fell that day, while the energy group rose 2.6 percent. The Fool's article gives no Monday settlement price for either benchmark, so the size of the pullback is not confirmed here.
What should investors watch this week?
The Federal Reserve meets on Tuesday and Wednesday. Kyle Rodda of Capital.com told TheStreet that markets price only about a 10 percent chance of a rate hike this time, with traders hunting for clues about a possible one in December. Microsoft, Alphabet and Amazon report, and investors are focused on how much they plan to spend on AI capacity. We set out the full calendar in our week-ahead preview.
TheStreet also notes that next week's US midterm elections are seen as an informal deadline for Iran peace talks, which keeps oil and the Gulf in the market's field of view. One sound reading of Monday is that the rally was relief, not conviction, and the Fed and the big earnings decide whether it lasts.
