New York Fashion Week Ends Tonight: Hilfiger at the Plaza, Khaite at Ten in the Navy Yard, and Ralph Lauren's Bow at 86

Seventy shows and presentations in six days, and as always the ones that will be remembered are the ones that were about something other than clothes. New York's spring 2027 season closes on Tuesday with Thom Browne, who has spent twenty years making the last slot a piece of theatre, and by then the caravan will already be packing for London. Here is what mattered.

Hilfiger at the Plaza

Tommy Hilfiger showed on Thursday night in the Grand Lobby of the Plaza Hotel, where he and his wife Dee lived in the penthouse for more than a decade, after champagne for guests upstairs. The Zoe Report called it less a runway than an invitation back into a private parlour, and the collection matched the setting: forty years of American prep, colour-blocked rugby dresses, Oxford shirts worn backwards, tartan blazers, polos either oversized or shrunk to hot-pants length, penny loafers, boat shoes and nineties skate shoes. Gigi Hadid opened, Romeo Beckham closed, a live orchestra played rock and roll, Kate Moss and Camila Cabello sat in front, and the show notes promised icons "remixed and refined for today". It was a brand reminding a younger audience that it invented the thing they are wearing.

Khaite at ten

Catherine Holstein marked Khaite's tenth anniversary on Saturday in the Brooklyn Storehouse at the Navy Yard, a venue long enough to make a runway feel like a procession. WWD's review describes a collection rooted in romantic, lingerie-inspired silhouettes from the 1920s to the 1940s, built around the ceremony of getting dressed, set against the label's signature leather pieces shrunk down in proportion. Khaite has spent a decade becoming the New York house that dresses the women who used to fly to Paris for it, and a tenth-anniversary show that reached for slips and bias cuts rather than for spectacle was a statement of confidence. Ralph Lauren, a night early

Ralph Lauren showed on Wednesday at the Jack Shainman Gallery in lower Manhattan, ahead of the official schedule as he has done for years, and the collection was billed as "an irreverent take on romance that creates a new elegance": voluminous trousers, navy and white coats, denim jackets edged with feathers, tailored white suits, draped floor-length gowns. Viola Davis and Cynthia Erivo were in the front row. At the end the designer, 86, walked out, waved and walked off. The applause was for the sixty years as much as the twenty minutes.

London from Thursday

London Fashion Week runs from Thursday 17 to Monday 21 September, and the British Fashion Council's schedule has more in it than in any recent season. McQueen shows at eight on Sunday evening, Seán McGirr's first London runway since he took over in December 2023 and the house's first women's show in the city since it moved to Paris in 2001; Lee McQueen founded it here, and the return is the week's event. Mulberry comes back to the official calendar with Christopher Kane's debut as creative director. Burberry, Erdem, Simone Rocha, Roksanda, Richard Quinn, Emilia Wickstead, Harris Reed and Barbour all show. Marks and Spencer makes its first appearance with a runway collection, H&M is doing something with Nick Knight and SHOWstudio that the BFC describes as reconceptualising the show format, and eBay is staging a pre-loved runway. "This season marks an exciting moment for London Fashion Week," said Laura Weir, the BFC's chief executive, "with the return of leading British brands alongside an exceptional new generation of creative talent." Milan follows from 22 September, with Vogue World in the Galleria on the opening night.
