Silver Sinks Below $50 for the First Time Since November 2025 as the Gold-Silver Ratio Climbs Past 79
A 5.8 percent drop took silver to $49.34 an ounce by mid-morning in New York, nearly twice gold's fall, as industrial demand worries and thin positioning turned a rate scare into a rout.

Silver did not just follow gold lower on Friday, it fell through a number with history attached. Spot silver was $49.34 an ounce at 10:05 a.m. ET (14:05 GMT), down 5.8 percent and below $50 for the first time since November 2025, Reuters reported via The Standard. The Rio Times' data had it at $49.00 at 10:50 a.m. ET, down 5.7 percent from Thursday's close of $51.94. Gold, by comparison, was down about 2.7 to 3.3 percent at the same times; we cover gold's fall in a separate piece.
Fifty dollars was silver's all-time high in both 1980 and 2011, BullionVault's Adrian Ash noted on Friday, and the metal has now broken back below it after a January peak that briefly took it above $119. Silver is down 8 percent on the week, Ash wrote, and the gold-to-silver ratio, the number of ounces of silver one ounce of gold buys, rose above 79, its highest so far in 2026.
Why does silver fall harder than gold?
Because it is two metals in one. The Silver Institute's World Silver Survey, published in April, put industrial use at 657.4 million ounces last year, the largest single category of demand, and forecast a 3 percent fall to 639.6 million ounces in 2026 as solar manufacturers cut the amount of silver in each photovoltaic cell, Investing News reported. Sucden Financial, in a note Kitco carried on Wednesday, said solar is the biggest drag, with silver use in the sector projected to drop 19 percent to about 151 million ounces as producers shift toward copper-based technologies.
So when the Federal Reserve's hawkish hold and hot inflation data raised the opportunity cost of holding metals, silver took the monetary hit alongside gold. When the Alphabet, Amazon and Intel results raised doubts about growth and forced margin selling, silver took an industrial hit too. Its market is also smaller and more leveraged, so the same flows move the price further.
Positioning explains the speed. Analysts at Metals Focus wrote this week that global silver-backed ETP holdings have fallen by about 60 million ounces since the start of the year, that net managed money long positions in CME silver futures dropped to 17 million ounces, the lowest since February 2024, and that London vault inventories reached 932 million ounces by the end of September, Kitco reported. The liquidity squeeze that lifted silver in 2025 and early 2026 has, in their phrase, largely disappeared.
What does the gold-silver ratio say?
USAGOLD's morning report put the ratio at 79.4 at 10:28 a.m. ET, up from 76.8 on Thursday. Metals Focus noted the ratio had risen above 76 for the first time since December 2025, after a 60 to 70 range through much of the summer, and that it is still below its 2020 to 2025 average of 82. That is the argument for both sides: silver bulls say the ratio is historically normal and will mean-revert when rate fears fade; bears say there is room to run higher first, especially with the global silver deficit expected to narrow this year and turn to a surplus in 2027.
Metals Focus' own view is that the underperformance will not last indefinitely, and that silver could start to outperform once markets scale back expectations of aggressive monetary tightening in 2027. Sucden expects silver at $50 to $53 into year end and a rebound to $57 to $60 by early 2027.
How bad has silver's October been?
It has been a round trip and then some. Silver opened 19 October at $57.38 and touched $58.60 on 20 October, the Rio Times said; from that open it has fallen 14.6 percent, against a 7 percent drop in gold. Over seven sessions it is down 14.7 percent. Reuters noted that platinum fell 4 percent to $1,428.35, its lowest since September 2025, and palladium 3.1 percent to $975.25, so the whole white-metals complex is under pressure, not silver alone.
The next clue comes from the physical market. The Silver Institute still expects a sixth straight annual deficit, 46.3 million ounces in 2026, and said the market has entered an era of reduced stocks. If bargain hunters in India and the coin market reappear under $50, that case gets a hearing. If they wait for the Fed in December, the ratio may test the low 80s first.
