US Measles Cases Reach 5,182 in 2026, the CDC's Highest Count in 35 Years, as a Row Over Deaths Deepens
The CDC has confirmed 5,182 cases this year, more than double 2025. Pennsylvania counts six deaths to the agency's four, and a fight over definitions is now public.

The number on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's measles page now reads 5,182. That is how many confirmed cases the agency had counted in the United States in 2026 as of 5 November, in an update posted on 6 November, and it is more than double the 2,289 cases the CDC recorded across all of 2025.
It is also, according to Al Jazeera's report on the data, the highest annual count the CDC has published since 1991. The disease was declared eliminated in the United States more than two decades ago.
How many measles cases are there in the US in 2026?
The CDC's measles data page lists 5,182 confirmed cases, including 18 among international visitors. Of the rest, 5,164 were reported by 47 jurisdictions. The agency says 4,993 cases, about 96 per cent, are linked to outbreaks, and that 43 new outbreaks have been recorded this year. Last year there were 48 outbreaks, with about 90 per cent of cases outbreak-associated.
Children carry much of the burden. Al Jazeera reports that 18 per cent of cases are in children under five and 41 per cent in those aged five to 19. The CDC page itself shows its 2026 age and hospitalisation breakdowns only as charts, so those two percentages are the outlet's reading of the data, not a figure we could confirm in the page text.
Why are the death counts disputed?
The CDC lists four measles deaths this year, a total it marks as subject to change. Pennsylvania, the hardest-hit state, reports 1,487 cases and six deaths through its own health department. The gap comes from a dispute over definitions that has turned political.
Al Jazeera reports that in August Pennsylvania counted two unvaccinated people who had died. The CDC included them in its national tally, then removed them after Health Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr questioned whether measles had caused or contributed to the deaths. Pennsylvania counts a death as measles-associated if a person with confirmed measles dies within 30 days of symptom onset, unless an unrelated event caused it. Governor Josh Shapiro and Kennedy are publicly at odds over the approach.
The CDC says it is working with the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists on a standardised definition of a measles death. Infectious disease experts quoted in the coverage say the current argument departs from the long-standing method the World Health Organization and the CDC have used to track measles-associated deaths.
What is happening to measles vaccination rates?
Measles spreads so easily that a high proportion of a community must be immune to stop outbreaks. The CDC page records kindergarten coverage of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine at 92.4 per cent in the 2025 to 2026 school year, down from 95.2 per cent in 2019 to 2020. A gap of under three percentage points sounds small, but it is spread unevenly, and clusters of unvaccinated children are where outbreaks take hold.
The CDC page does not give a text breakdown of 2026 cases by vaccination status. Its 2024 figures, the latest it states in words, showed 89 per cent of cases were unvaccinated or of unknown status, with breakthrough infections making up roughly 10 per cent of cases overall.
What to watch next
Three things will decide how this plays out. The first is the winter respiratory season, which brings more indoor mixing and more strain on clinics. The second is whether the CDC and state epidemiologists agree a single definition of a measles death before the next count. The third is whether coverage in the schools now falling below the 95 per cent mark recovers.
This article is reporting, not medical advice. Questions about measles vaccination, exposure or symptoms belong with a clinician or local public health service who knows the reader's history, and anyone who suspects measles should phone ahead before attending a clinic so that others are not exposed.
The next CDC update will show whether the line that crossed 5,000 this autumn is flattening or still climbing.
