Wall Street Week Ahead: October Inflation on Tuesday Tests a Market in Correction as Brent Holds Near $98
A hot inflation print would land on a Nasdaq already in correction and a Fed that held with two dissenters wanting a hike. CoreWeave, Cisco and Applied Materials report, and India closes for Diwali.

Futures reopen on Sunday evening, and the first question traders will ask is not about the midterms. It is whether Tuesday's inflation number gives the Federal Reserve a reason to raise rates into a stock market that has just been through a violent sell-off. The Dow fell about 1,800 points on Thursday, its worst sell-off since April 2025, and the Nasdaq Composite is in a correction, led down by artificial intelligence stocks, CNBC reported in its week-ahead outlook.
The S&P 500 is back to roughly where it was in July. CBOE's volatility index was near 24 on Friday, and one strategist told CNBC he wants to see it above 30 before calling a real flush.
When is the October CPI report and what is expected?
The Bureau of Labor Statistics releases October consumer prices at 8:30am Eastern on Tuesday 10 November. CNBC gives the consensus as 3.9 percent year on year, up from 3.7 percent, with core inflation expected to cool somewhat on the month. Upstox has headline up 0.3 percent on the month and core up 0.2 percent, and puts the market-implied chance of a December Fed hike near 80 percent.
That hike is not a fantasy. At its October meeting the Fed held the target range at 3.75 to 4.00 percent, but two members dissented in favour of a quarter-point increase, according to TradingKey. Producer prices follow on Friday 13 November.
Which earnings reports matter this week?
Monday brings Take-Two, Occidental Petroleum, KKR and Constellation Energy. The AI trade is tested later in the week: CoreWeave reports after the close on Tuesday, and Cisco and Applied Materials follow on Thursday evening, per TradingKey and CNBC. John Williams, president of the New York Fed, speaks on Thursday morning. Nvidia reports later in November, without a date yet.
What is oil doing before the Monday open?
Brent settled at $98.32 on Friday and WTI at $90.83, both barely changed on the day but down more than 16 percent and nearly 13 percent on the week, CNBC reported in a separate oil report. Part of the slide came from hopes of diplomacy: Iran reportedly sent a nuclear proposal to Washington through Qatar. No agreement has been announced, and Iran said it was hit by three more tanker attacks on Thursday. Bob McNally of Rapidan Energy puts the chance that fighting resumes at 80 percent and says both benchmarks could top $100 if it does.
Overseas, India scheduled its special Muhurat trading session for Sunday, the day of Diwali. The Indian exchanges are closed on Tuesday for the holiday, which shortens the week there, Upstox said, and India's own October inflation reading is due on Thursday.
Our read for Monday is simple: oil is the weekend risk, CPI is the Tuesday risk, and a market in which the Magnificent Seven lost about $1 trillion in a day last week has little patience for either.
