GITEX Moves to Expo City, and Brings Seven Shows With It

Six thousand eight hundred exhibitors, two hundred thousand visitors and four hundred government entities across five days in December. The interesting part is what has been bolted onto the side of it.

GITEX has been running in Dubai since the early 1980s, back when it was a modest computer fair and the personal computer was still a novelty in the region. It is now among the largest technology exhibitions anywhere, and its 2026 edition runs from 7 to 11 December at the Dubai Exhibition Centre in Expo City.

The format splits: a summit on 7 December, then a four-day expo from the 8th to the 11th.

The numbers, and what they conceal

The headline figures are more than 200,000 attendees from over 180 countries, around 6,800 exhibiting companies and more than 400 government entities.

That last number is the one worth dwelling on. A technology show where four hundred government bodies take stands is not primarily a technology show. It is a procurement event, and a diplomatic one. Ministries from across Africa, Central Asia and the subcontinent come to Dubai in December because it is the single most efficient place in the calendar to meet a hundred vendors and twenty other governments in one week.

The 200,000 figure also needs reading with care. Exhibition attendance numbers are self-reported by organisers, they usually count visits rather than unique people, and a five-day event with re-entry inflates easily. The scale is real; the precision is not.

Seven shows in a trench coat

What GITEX actually is now is a holding structure for a set of co-located events, and that is the more interesting story.

Running alongside the main expo are AI Everything, Expand North Star, GITEX Impact, Future Urbanism, Global DevSlam and Fintech Surge, plus the debut of TechCation this year.

Each of these was either spun out of the main floor or absorbed into it, and the logic is straightforward. A general technology exhibition loses definition as it grows: at 6,800 exhibitors nobody can walk it, and a visitor interested in fintech has no efficient path through a hall of hardware distributors. Splitting into branded sub-shows lets the thing keep expanding while remaining navigable.

Expand North Star is the startup and investor track and is arguably the most commercially consequential of them, because it is where early-stage capital and regional founders actually meet. Global DevSlam targets developers rather than buyers, which is a different audience with different reasons to travel. Fintech Surge reflects how much of Dubai's recent positioning has been financial rather than industrial.

TechCation is new and unproven. On the evidence of the name it points at the intersection of technology and travel, and first editions of these spin-offs are usually small.

Why the venue change matters

GITEX spent decades at the Dubai World Trade Centre, which is in the middle of the city and surrounded by hotels, metro stations and everything else. Expo City is out towards the southern edge, on the site built for Expo 2020.

The trade is space against convenience. Expo City has far more of the former and considerably less of the latter, and anyone who attended a show there will tell you that the walking distances are real and the transport at closing time is a genuine consideration.

For a show that had outgrown its old home, the move was more or less forced. It does change the shape of the week: less spilling out into the city in the evening, more contained on site.

When is GITEX Global 2026?

The summit is on 7 December 2026 and the expo runs from 8 to 11 December, at the Dubai Exhibition Centre in Expo City Dubai. Note the split, because it catches people out: buying a pass for the expo days does not get you into the summit, and the two have quite different audiences.

Is GITEX worth attending?

It depends entirely on what you want from it. As a buyer with a defined procurement need and meetings arranged in advance, it is extremely efficient and hard to replicate. As a startup looking for regional investors, Expand North Star is one of the better uses of a week in the calendar. As a general visitor hoping to be inspired by walking the floor, it is exhausting and largely wasted, because 6,800 stands is well beyond what anyone can meaningfully absorb in four days. The determining factor is whether your diary is full before you land.

What else is on around it?

December is the tail end of a dense season. Big 5 Global runs at the Dubai World Trade Centre from 23 to 26 November, a fortnight earlier and in a different sector, and ADIPEC took Abu Dhabi in early November. The full run is in the autumn exhibition calendar.
