Riyadh’s Next Great Upgrade Is a City Designed for Everyday Life
Parks, walking routes, sports spaces and connected neighborhoods may become Vision 2030’s most meaningful contribution to daily life in the capital.
Riyadh’s skyline tells a story of national ambition, but the city’s next transformation may be felt closer to the ground. A shaded path, a neighborhood park and a safe route to a café can change daily life more directly than a tower. Vision 2030 increasingly connects the capital’s global growth with this human-scale experience.
The Council of Economic and Development Affairs’ 2026 review highlights urban humanization, parks, sports facilities and the opening of a large section of Sports Boulevard. These investments recognize a simple truth: a successful global city must also work well on an ordinary Tuesday evening.
Public space is social infrastructure
Good public space gives families room to move, helps neighbors meet and allows small businesses to benefit from foot traffic. It also supports public health. The Vision 2030 Annual Report 2025 says 59.1 percent of adults met recommended weekly physical activity levels in 2025, ahead of the 2027 target, with public spaces and sports infrastructure among the contributing factors.
Design quality will decide how far these gains travel. Trees need time and care, crossings need to feel safe and transit needs to connect destinations people actually use. A green corridor becomes meaningful when it joins homes, schools, shops and workplaces rather than existing as an isolated showcase.
A capital that belongs to its residents
Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s ambition to position Riyadh as a leading global capital brings investment and international attention. The positive opportunity is to pair that scale with a strong local identity. Salmani architectural principles, climate-aware materials and welcoming streets can make growth feel rooted in place.
The official Sports Boulevard project imagines an extensive network for cycling, walking, riding, arts and recreation. Its success will be measured in repeated use by residents of different ages and abilities.
The future at walking speed
Riyadh does not need to choose between international ambition and everyday comfort. The best version of the city does both. When residents can move, gather and enjoy their neighborhoods more easily, Vision 2030 becomes visible not only on a map but in the rhythm of daily life.
Small details will determine whether that promise lasts: shade at midday, maintenance after opening day, safe access for children and comfortable seating for older residents. Human-scale design turns investment into belonging.
