Choosing Light Bulbs: Lumens, Kelvin and Colour Rendering Explained, Room by Room

Watts tell you what a bulb costs to run, lumens tell you how bright it is, kelvin tells you whether it looks warm or cold, and the colour rendering index tells you whether a tomato still looks like one.

The Bench With the Extra Armrest Is Not Being Thoughtful About Your Posture

Sloped ledges, studded window sills, armrests in the middle of a bench, blue lighting in a toilet. Defensive design is usually described as deterring antisocial behaviour, and it works by making a place slightly worse for everybody.

The 400 Metre Cube Is Paused, Its Deadline Has Moved to 2040, and Its Chief Executive Has Gone

New Murabba has replaced Michael Dyke with a Public Investment Fund executive who is already running another developer. Work on the Mukaab is suspended, the district around it continues, and the completion date has slipped by a decade.

A Beijing Studio Put a Restaurant Inside a Live Highway Underpass and Left Half of It to the Public

MARS Studio split the space beneath a working road bridge in Tongzhou with a wall of mirrored glass. One side is a 108 square metre dining room. The other stays an open corridor for anyone walking or cycling through.

Housing for Old Age Is the Hardest Brief in Architecture, and Almost Nobody Takes It Seriously

A Stirling Prize winning practice spent its first later living project doing things most retirement housing never bothers with. The design lessons transfer to any budget. The price, unfortunately, does not.

One Colour Authority Named a White for 2026, the Other Named Three Blues, and Designers Are Selling Brown

Pantone chose Cloud Dancer. Dulux broke its own format and chose a family of blues. Meanwhile the survey of what interior designers say clients actually request puts chocolate brown and maximalism at the top. Three answers, one year.

The 2026 Pritzker Went to an Architect Who Builds Small, Strange Things Out of Stone and Fibreglass

Chile's Smiljan Radic Clarke is the fifty fifth laureate of architecture's most significant prize, cited for work that is immediately recognisable and conceptually evasive. In a decade of megaprojects, the jury picked the opposite.

90,300 Empty Offices Are Becoming Flats, Which Is Four Times the 2022 Number and Still the Hard Way to Build

Office to apartment conversions rose 28 per cent this year and now make up nearly half of all planned adaptive reuse in the United States. The pipeline is real. So are the reasons most office buildings cannot be converted at all.

Somebody Finally Measured the Mashrabiya, and the Number Is 2.4 Degrees

Traditional Arab screens get praised in general terms and tested rarely. Field studies in hot climates put a figure on what they do, and the figure is real, useful, and smaller than the romantic version of the story suggests.

Cement Is Around Seven Per Cent of Global Emissions and the Most Promising Fix Needs No New Factory

LC3 replaces part of the clinker in cement with calcined clay and limestone, cutting emissions by up to forty per cent. Around thirty five plants were producing calcined clay for cement by 2026, with more building.

More Than One in Four Adults Over Sixty Five Falls Each Year, Mostly at Home, Mostly in Two Rooms

The design changes that keep people in their own homes are cheap, undramatic and almost always installed after the fall rather than before it. The obstacle is not cost. It is that the fittings look like hospital equipment.

A Flat Painted Wall Cannot Meet Dubai's West Facing Numbers. A Shading Layer With Depth Can

Al Sa'fat caps glazing at a solar heat gain coefficient of 0.25 and a U-value of 2.0. Those two figures quietly rule out the all-glass tower that defined the region's skyline, and they are why shading is coming back.

Award Winning Buildings Were Using Twice the Energy They Promised, and Almost Nobody Went Back to Check

New homes emit around 2.5 times their design estimates on average. Non-domestic buildings run to 3.8 times. The studies that established this looked at buildings that had been published as exemplars.

The Greenest Building Is Usually the One Already Standing, and the Arithmetic Is Not Close

Building a new home of the same size can produce up to thirteen times the embodied carbon of refurbishing the old one. That number has started appearing in planning decisions, which is how a technical argument becomes a policy.

Thirty Eight States Now Let You Build a Tall Building Out of Wood, and the Fire Argument Went the Other Way

Mass timber spent a decade as an architectural curiosity because codes did not have a category for it. Three new construction types changed that, and the fire testing that was supposed to kill the idea is what made the case.

Designing From an Archive Is Harder Than Designing From a Mood Board

A twenty-three piece collection drawn from research into the Barbican's original interiors arrives this month. Working from a real archive imposes constraints that a reference image never does.

A Pavilion Built From Police Riot Shields Asks What a Material Remembers

The Pangolin Shield goes up on the Strand next month, assembled from Indian police shields and rain shields over bamboo. Reuse in architecture usually argues about carbon. This one argues about meaning.
